Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado

  • by

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in the state of Colorado is lesser known among the USA’s national parks. It guards an unbelievably deep canyon, with sheer walls comprised of both volcanic and metamorphic rock. The canyon is like something from a fantasy series like The Lord of the Rings. The depth of the canyon, its sheer walls and spires, are beyond belief. At its deepest, known as Warner Point, the canyon walls soar 2,722 feet from the river below. The canyon is also relatively narrow, with its narrowest point being only 1,100 feet (335 m) from rim… Read More »Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado

Grand Canyon Hike to Phantom Ranch

  • by

The sweeping scale of the canyon, the colorful rock layers, the ever-changing vistas, seem inconceivable to the human mind. Seen from the rim, the canyon is amazing and impressive, but by hiking down, it can be appreciated on a completely different level. Our Grand Canyon hike to Phantom Ranch with two nights at PR was an exhilarating experience.

Hiking the Grinnell Glacier Trail, Glacier National Park

The impressive Grinnell Glacier is on the northern side of Mount Gould and sits at about 7,000 feet. The hike features stunning jeweled lake views, alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers, the chance to spot wildlife, and the prize – ending at the foot of the Grinnell Glacier and its incredible setting. Hiking the Grinnell Glacier Trail is the… Read More »Hiking the Grinnell Glacier Trail, Glacier National Park

Hiking the Highline Trail, Glacier National Park

We began the Highline Trail at sunrise on Day 2 of our time in the Going-to-the-Sun area of Glacier NP MT. This would be one of the epic adventures of our Glacier experience! Our Route and Pre-planned Decisions Our one-way hike combined the 7.6-mile Highline Trail from the Logan Pass Visitor Center to the Granite Park Chalet with the 4.2-mile trail from the Chalet down to The Loop, for a total hike of 11.8 miles. We planned ahead and chose to park our car at the Logan Pass Visitor Center and make the “downhill” hike from there to The Loop.… Read More »Hiking the Highline Trail, Glacier National Park

Kootenay National Park along the Windermere Highway

  • by

Our drive down the Windermere Highway was part of a larger trip to Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta, Canada and to Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. Before driving the Windermere Highway, we had spent the night at the Wabasso Campground near the northern end of the Icefields Parkway. We wanted to break up the 452 mile (726 km) drive from the Wabasso Campground in Jasper National Park to Glacier National Park by staying overnight at a developed RV park in Radium Hot Springs, BC. This was around the halfway point of our trip and would allow us… Read More »Kootenay National Park along the Windermere Highway
