Our visit to Glacier was part of a larger northern Rockies road trip that also included Banff National Park, the Icefields Parkway through Banff and Jasper, and Kootenay National Park. If you’re planning a cross-border adventure, this region pairs beautifully with Glacier National Park.

To see how it all fits together, we’ve mapped out an Epic Banff & Glacier Itinerary that links these parks into one unforgettable road trip.

Start Here: Many Glacier Hotel, Lakes & Boat Shuttles

From grand historic architecture to some of the park’s most rewarding hikes, the Many Glacier area offers an unmatched concentration of scenery and experiences. Below are the highlights—whether you’re here for a single afternoon or several unforgettable days.

Many Glacier Hotel

Built in 1914 by the Great Northern Railway, Many Glacier Hotel is the largest and most iconic lodge in Glacier National Park. Sitting directly on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake, the Swiss-chalet-style hotel is framed by dramatic mountain walls, creating one of the most memorable settings of any national park lodge in the U.S.

Overnight at Many Glacier Hotel: Rooms book up fast, and staying here puts you steps from Swiftcurrent Lake, scenic boat tours, and major trailheads. Even if you don’t stay overnight, the lobby and lakeshore are well worth a visit. To book a stay, visit the Glacier National Park Lodges website.

As we share on our About page, we usually don’t stay in national park lodges—we prefer to enjoy the grounds and atmosphere, and put our budget toward experiences.

Even if you’re not staying overnight, a stop here is essential. Wander the lobby, stroll the lakeshore, grab a coffee, or simply soak in the views—this truly is the heart of Many Glacier.

Upon arrival, park in the large lot uphill from the hotel. Even here, the views are striking, with Many Glacier Hotel framed by Swiftcurrent Lake and towering peaks. From the lot, walk down the stairs to the lobby, taking in the chalet-style architecture, decorative trim, and flower-filled window boxes along the way.

Inside the Lodge

The hotel spans five connected buildings, with the main lobby at the center. This soaring space is worth lingering in, especially after a hike or during a sudden mountain rainstorm. Timbered vaulted ceilings, historic lighting, and a massive stone fireplace create a warm contrast to the rugged alpine environment outside.

Heidi’s Snack Shop and Espresso Stand, located on the lower level, is a great spot to grab a coffee, a snack, or a light meal to enjoy by the lake.

Swiftcurrent Lake / Back of Many Glacier Hotel

Step outside the rear of the hotel and you’re immediately on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake. From here, Grinnell Point and the surrounding peaks dominate the skyline, while the back side of the hotel reveals rows of balcony rooms overlooking the water. Sunrise and early evening are especially magical along this shoreline.

Multiple trails begin directly from the Many Glacier Hotel, including easy lakeside routes along Swiftcurrent Lake and on toward Lake Josephine, which lies just beyond it.

Even if you’re short on time—or prefer a more relaxed walk—the Swiftcurrent Nature Trail is an excellent option. This easy 2.6-mile loop circles the lake and offers beautiful scenery without significant elevation gain.

Scenic Boat Rides / Hiker Shuttles

Scenic boat tours depart directly from the dock behind the hotel and are operated by Glacier Park Boat Company. Tickets include two narrated boat crossings—first across Swiftcurrent Lake aboard the Chief Two Guns, then across Lake Josephine on the Morning Eagle.

Between the two lakes, passengers walk a short 0.2-mile connector trail. While often described as “steep,” it’s brief and manageable for most visitors.

The second boat, the Morning Eagle, takes you across Lake Josephine. From the Morning Eagle, you’ll get beautiful views of Salamander Glacier and Gem Glacier.

Upon arrival at the southern end of Lake Josephine, you can disembark to do some hiking, or just enjoy the area around the shore.

For hikers, these boats are more than scenic—they’re a strategic way to shorten long trail days. Riding the boats can save over two miles of hiking each way, making longer routes like Grinnell Glacier more approachable.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to hike or have limited time, you can stay on the boat and return back over both lakes to the Many Glacier Hotel.

Hikes from the Southern End of Lake Josephine

From the Lake Josephine dock, trails branch out toward Hidden Falls, Grinnell Lake, and Grinnell Glacier. If you plan to hike, a round-trip boat ticket makes the return logistics easy.

One-way return tickets are also available and can be a game-changer after a long hike—something we were especially grateful for after our Grinnell Glacier trek.

Grinnell Glacier Hike

See our Grinnell Glacier Hike Guide for details on the epic adventure we had hiking to the glacier. It’s a MUST for serious hikers!

Beyond the Lakes: Wildlife, Easy Walks & Waterfalls

Fishercap Lake

Fishercap Lake is one of the easiest and most rewarding wildlife spots in the Many Glacier area. Just a short stroll from the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, this quiet lake is known for frequent moose sightings, particularly in the early morning and evening.

If you don’t spot wildlife right away, check the wooded areas along the north shore—moose often emerge quietly and without warning.

Fishercap Lake sits directly along the trail to Redrock Falls, making it an easy stop if you’re continuing on toward Redrock Lake.

Redrock Falls and Lake Hike

The hike to Redrock Falls is relatively flat and easy, leading to a gorgeous lake-and-waterfall setting. It’s 3.6 miles roundtrip from the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn parking lot to Redrock Falls (at the far end of the lake). Wildflowers brighten the well-marked trail. This is a great option for families.

Apikuni Falls (For Strong Legs & Waterfall Collectors)

Apikuni Falls is a steep, short hike that’s best for visitors who want a quick workout and don’t mind a narrower trail. If you’re prioritizing the lake-and-peak scenery that makes Many Glacier famous—you may find other stops in this area more rewarding.

The trailhead for Apikuni Falls is accessed from Many Glacier Road and is located about 1.4 miles east of the Many Glacier Hotel. The out-and-back trail is around 1.7 miles roundtrip. The cascade plunges down the sheer cliff face. This is a moderately difficult hike, with the first 0.2 miles being flat, followed by a steep uphill climb to the falls. Overall, the elevation gain is a little more than 600 feet, and you are rewarded for your efforts when you arrive at the base of the falls.

Where to Stay and Eat in Many Glacier

Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and Cabins

The Swiftcurrent Motor Inn began operating in 1933 and offers 95 “rustic” motel rooms and basic cabins. You’ll also find a gift shop, camp store, and a restaurant (see below). To book a reservation, visit the Glacier National Park Lodges website.

If you’re staying at the Many Glacier Campground, the Swiftcurrent is an easy walk away and a convenient stop for a meal or treat. Campers can also use the public showers here for a fee.

Dining – Nell’s at Swiftcurrent

Nell’s at Swiftcurrent is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers a straightforward menu. While it’s not fine dining, it’s a convenient option in Many Glacier, with items like salads, pizza, and other crowd-pleasers.

Order food and drinks at the counter, then choose a table. Staff will bring your food out when it’s ready.

Many Glacier Campground

The Many Glacier Campground offers a prime location near trails, the hotel, and Swiftcurrent Motor Inn—but sites are tight, especially for RVs. Reservations are essential and highly competitive.

If your dates are booked, a limited number of sites are released four days in advance on Recreation.gov. This can work, but only if you’re logged in and ready the moment reservations open.

The National Park Service explains it this way: most front-country campgrounds in Glacier require reservations through Recreation.gov, with some sites available six months in advance and others released four days in advance.

Babb, Montana

Just outside the park, Babb serves as a practical resupply stop. Thronson’s General Store offers groceries, supplies, and a café, making it a convenient last stop before heading into Many Glacier.

Frequently Asked Questions About Many Glacier

Is Many Glacier worth visiting if I only have one day?

Yes—Many Glacier is absolutely worth visiting even with just one day, and for many visitors it becomes the highlight of their trip to Glacier National Park. In a single day, you can visit the Many Glacier Hotel, walk along Swiftcurrent Lake, take a scenic boat tour, spot wildlife, and enjoy short, easy hikes. If you have limited time, focusing on Many Glacier provides a concentrated dose of Glacier’s most dramatic scenery.

Do I need a reservation to enter the Many Glacier area?

During recent summers, Glacier National Park used a timed-entry vehicle reservation system for specific areas. As of the last published details, timed-entry reservations applied to the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road and the North Fork—not specifically to Many Glacier. Requirements can change year to year, so check the official Glacier National Park website and Recreation.gov for the most current 2026 access rules before your trip. Regardless of reservations, parking in Many Glacier fills early in peak season, so arriving early (or later in the afternoon) improves your chances.

What is the best hike in Many Glacier for non-hikers or casual walkers?

For visitors who don’t want a strenuous hike, the Swiftcurrent Nature Trail is one of the best options in the Many Glacier area. This easy 2.6-mile loop circles Swiftcurrent Lake with minimal elevation gain and excellent scenery. The lakeshore near the Many Glacier Hotel and Fishercap Lake are also excellent low-effort areas for walking, photography, and wildlife viewing—especially moose in the early morning or evening.
